Notes from Steve
Last night at band practice - we learned this song by the Old Crow Medicine Show band. It felt so familiar, and it sounded like another song. This drove me crazy, and I went home afterward, and all night I tossed and turned trying to figure out what that song was. I figured it out this morning and texted bandmates the news. They were less enthusiastic about my discovery.* "Oh, yes, that's great, Steve. I'm glad you figured this out."
Ok, so I realize my anxieties related to figuring out song doppelgangers are not a top priority in anyone's life. Still, I really feel the older we get, the more things blend together. Senses dim. And yuck - I don't like this. (Note: I use the fact that I'm somewhat deaf and blind to claim ignorance that I "didn't hear or see"… it's a convenient excuse).
This -- however, is no excuse to ignore or drop out of things that are important. Now is the time we must pay attention and be concerned. Whether it's our health, or politics, or our kids' new "words", or what emojis mean … if we don't pay attention and figure out what is going on before it's too late, we will be sorry. Do songs that sound alike matter? - No, they don't. At lunch the other day on a bike ride with people of the similar age, we talked about how it was so important to keep our brains active and exercised. Be curious, do puzzles, read everything you can - know what is going on all the time.
Be aware.
*Old Crow Medicine Show song "We're All In This Together" sounds a little bit like "Long May You Run" by the Stills-Young Band. … Just go with me on this …
