Gastroenterology Specializations

Gastroenterology is the study of the normal function and diseases of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts, and liver. It involves a detailed understanding of the normal functions of the gastrointestinal organs. This includes the following gastrointestinal functions:

  • Movement of material through the stomach and intestine
  • Digestion and absorption of nutrients into the body
  • Removal of waste from the system
  • Function of the liver as a digestive organ

Our gastroenterology teams may use a variety of testing and evaluation methods to diagnose and treat issues related to the digestive tract. The most common procedures are colonoscopies and endoscopies. Both a colonoscopy and an endoscopy may be used for screening and early cancer detection in the gastrointestinal tract.
