What is Inpatient Care?
Inpatient care involves medical treatment provided when a patient is admitted and stays for at least one night. At Iowa Specialty Hospitals, this service represents a commitment to providing our patients with the highest level of personalized care. Situations requiring inpatient care include:
Planned Admissions
For certain medical procedures, such as knee replacements, hip replacements, or childbirth, planned admissions allow us to prepare for your arrival and ensure that everything is in place for a smooth and successful experience.
Emergency Admissions
When unexpected health challenges arise, our medical team is here to respond. If you require immediate medical attention, our facilities are equipped to provide the necessary care to stabilize your condition and help you on the path to recovery.

Case Management Services
Coordinating Your Medical Care
The Case Management Department at Iowa Specialty Hospital provides the following services:

Skilled Care
Skilled Care - A Trusted Partner When You Need Additional Support
Iowa Specialty Hospital is proud to offer skilled care services. Skilled care may be right for you if you have experienced an event or have had a change in health that requires additional support regaining your strength and independence. Types of situations that make an individual a candidate include: joint replacement or other orthopedic surgery, illnesses requiring continued IV therapy, acute illnesses, stroke, or cardiac incidences.
Skilled care services include: physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, ADL evaluation and training, home safety and recommendations, skilled nursing care, medication monitoring, IV therapy, provider visits, activities, nutrition services, laboratory monitoring, and patient and family care meetings.
We also offer a few additional comforts such as personalized care, room service, warm blankets, fresh baked treats, laundry, haircuts, and pastoral services.
Admission Criteria
Medicare, Managed Care, Medicaid, and private insurance have their own guidelines regarding skilled care services. Managed Care (Medicare Plan C, Medicare Advantage Plans), Medicaid, and private insurance care benefits will be verified prior to admission and pre-authorization for admission obtained. This is not a guarantee of payment. Throughout your skilled stay, our hospital UR/Case Management team will work with your insurance to obtain continued authorization.
Swing Bed Self Pay
Swing Bed Self Pay services are available if justification for skilled levels of care is not met, but you wish to remain within the hospital on a private-pay basis. All private-pay charges will be paid on a seven-day basis to prevent any misunderstanding of long-term accumulated charges. More detailed information regarding Swing Bed Self Pay charges that are most frequently incurred is available upon request.
Medicare Qualifications
- Acute level of care stay, with medical necessity, for three consecutive days within the last thirty days.
- Physician referral for necessary daily skilled services need related to why the patient was hospitalized.
- Medicare Part A (Hospital) Benefit or available days remaining in current benefit period.
Discharge
Our skilled care team will work with you and your loved ones to help with a safe discharge plan back to your home. They will help to acquire medical equipment you may need upon discharge as well as schedule necessary follow-up appointments.
