Notes from Steve

September 15, 2025

The leaders at ISH did a day and a half of leadership training (generational work styles and communication) out at the Clarmond Country Club in the early part of September.  It was awesome—lots of challenging discussions and camaraderie and team building.  The presenters (great team; they present all over the United States to all sorts of industries) kept saying that we were really a fantastic team.  We talked about our history and standards, and how we deal with employees and patients … basically, we told them our story.

You know, I tell our story all the time.  I’ve told it so much that sometimes I wonder if it really is true, or if some of it is embellished to make it sound better.  The first night of our training - I attended the annual orthopedic dinner we’ve been doing since 2008.  I really tried to listen to the patients and the docs and the staff.*  The patients are beside themselves with praise for ISH.

Have you ever looked at an old picture of yourself and thought, “That was such a great time in my life”?  And then you think, “At the time, I really thought I was too heavy, or didn’t make enough money, or I was always worried about the kids”.  And then you think, “I’d give anything to be back to that time - I didn’t realize how great I had it.”  This is one of those times.  It’s really good (actually, it’s great).

We’re that good.

*This is a really cool event.  Basically, it’s a celebration for the patients over the last year who had an ortho procedure at ISH (hip, knee, spine, shoulder, etc.).  The providers and staff serve the meal to our seated guests (patients and their plus one), and then the docs give a little speech thanking the patients for trusting us with their care.  It’s also a celebration of us.  The energy in the room is always beautiful - lots of obvious love and compassion.
