Notes from Steve

August 3, 2026

The summer is flying by. This is usually my favorite season, but today the temp of 90 degrees is a "feels like" 116 degrees because of the humidity.  (I didn't make this up - I heard some meteorologist say it.) Well, that is not acceptable.  I can't even see out of my windows because they are fogged up.  Huge ick to this.

Last week was RAGBRAI.  I ate everything in sight.  It was crazy.  Needless to say, a good time was had by all.  The last day - there were a couple of massive hills.  I was talking to someone who said that going down the hills scared her the most.  Hmmm ... not me - I buzz down them at top speed, passing everyone.  If there were a foreseeable way I'd die, this is it.*

On TikTok, some gal was slammed for complaining that a UPS driver was in the street in front of her house eating a sandwich.  She ended up deleting her account because of all the negative comments directed at her.  People were asking, 'What's happened to society?'  In the past, people would go out with a glass of Kool-Aid or a bottle of water and thank them for their service, not complain that "how dare they eat a sandwich in front of my house?!?"

Last week, we saw good societal behavior in action during RAGBRAI.  Everyone (for the most part) was gracious and happy, and this fills my bucket.  Give grace to those outside in this oppressive heat, ride down hills with abandon, and eat everything in sight if you're hungry.

* "It was a hot summer day in Dubuque when Clarion resident Steve Simonin, age 87, went sailing down Girl Scout Hill on his bicycle at 54 miles per hour, hit a pebble, and was yeeted into the Mississippi River."  I'd be fine with this.
