Notes from Steve

July 28, 2025

I’m on RAGBRAI this week with the ISH RAGBRAI team. Last night, we camped in Iowa Falls, and it poured. Crazy lightning and thunder, and there was about three inches of water in my tent in the morning. If you know anything about me, I’m not one who does well sleeping in three inches of water.

My long-term handle on Gmail is groundedsteve. It came from when I started “grounded” in Clarion in 2011.  People said - “Oh, like grounded coffee”. Sure, that, but for me it was bigger than that. I was the cook on Saturday mornings for five years because it gave me a different perspective and outlook. Sleeping in water in a tent - and riding four hundred miles with 20,000 friends does that as well. All year, I live life dealing with aches and pains and thoughts that “there is no way I can do that,” and then pushing the envelope to a place that is outside of my comfort zone.

When we live outside of our zones, we expand our boundaries and are able to do more than we thought possible.

So the next time it rains, go sleep in your yard, you’ll thank me for expanding your life.
