Notes from Steve

July 13, 2026

I asked the sisters if they had Mom's recipe for potato salad.  I remembered it included Dorothy Lynch dressing.  "No"… ok, fine.  I'm going to try and replicate her recipe from memory (from 40 years ago, wish me luck).  Her salad was not like potato salad anywhere else, but I know what she liked and what was in our cabinets. It's probably fairly simple - she didn't deviate too much with ingredients.  I do love a good challenge.

I was never in debate in school, but I think they were on the right track regarding differing perspectives.  Instead of "it won't work" -- I like to ponder "how can it work?".  A lot of times, if we allow ourselves to see something from a different angle or someone else's perspective, it changes the discussion.  My coach says to "rise above the emotion" and "see the game how it's being played".  What is the motivation of each person, and why do they think they're right?  It's an interesting time in this world right now, and (in my very humble opinion) - the winners are the ones who try and understand and move the game forward as opposed to "win at all costs".

When you give up the desire to win by crushing the competition - your energy shifts.  A lot of times, I need to realize in a disagreement with someone else that my individual goals and desires may not increase. Still, if it helps others to achieve a better outcome, then it's probably worth my time.  ((Small towns are great at this -- neighborly “care and concern” is alive and well in our communities -- this is a gift that goes unnoticed.))

I'm feeling nostalgic and "small town" this week.

P.S. - Eat some sweet corn.  It's in season.
