Notes from Steve

June 15, 2026

I rode the 50 miles in the Break the Cycle* ride on Saturday on the Trestle Trail starting in Ankeny.  Very worthy cause, and so important.  A bunch of friends joined, and it was an awesome day.  It was 100% humidity, and I was basically a human sprinkler.  One of the most important things to recognize and appreciate is that staying hydrated is not just to quench the thirst but basically to stay alive**.  I should write this on my hand for future reference.

I see a lot more e-bikes on these rides.  They’re hard to recognize sometimes - they look just like a non-e-bike.  The best thing is that people can still ride and keep up with the group.  Lots of shade has been thrown towards the e-bikers, and I don’t understand why.  Sure, they can fly up hills and go fast, but that should be motivating to me.  I have to pedal hard to keep up.  This is a good thing.  I will reserve my criticism for those bikers (e or non-e) that don’t have helmets.  Safety first, people, safety first.

If you’re not biking, I hope you are enjoying June some way.  Running or walking or camping or fishing or swimming at the local pool or just breathing the smells of spring - this is the best time of year and I hope you are taking it in.  Before you know it, it’ll be February.

*What is Break the Cycle? Break the Cycle hosts endurance events to raise awareness and funds for real victims of human trafficking and modern-day slavery. Break the Cycle participants give voice to the issue of human trafficking and raise awareness and funds for Hope for Justice to help identify victims, get them to safety and support their recovery in the U.S. and around the world.
**one of my friends gave me half her protein bar and a Gatorade.  I told her she saved my life
