Notes from Steve

April 27, 2026

I took several days off to stare out the window and regroup.  I ran a 5K, power-cleaned my grill, and went on bike rides.  My grill down at my loft in Des Moines started on fire a couple of years ago, and a neighbor had to come by to alert me that my patio was essentially on fire.  That kind of freaked me out a bit.  It was because it was so filthy*.  I’m surprised it didn’t happen again.  I checked out this BBQ grill cleaning service, and they charged a lot, so I decided I could definitely do this myself.  It was horrible.

I feel that my days of staring out the window were successful.    In rounding, there is a question: “Have you used PTO to recharge yourself?” I can now answer yes to that. (Although I’m not technically recharged - I am less stressed and I’ll take that as a win.) Some of my “vacations” over the past years have completely exhausted me, and I probably should have taken a vacation to rest up from my vacation.***

However, you need to make the choice to recharge and relax - it’s important.  If you aren’t at your best, then you can’t do good work anywhere.

*Because of this Korean BBQ thing I make with gochujang sauce, and it’s really goopy.
**$375.
*** My friend Brian has 4 daughters, and when they were young, he used to say that going to work was his vacation.
