Notes from Steve
I was watching a video of one of the bike coaches from Peloton - her name is Jen. She is 57 and is talking about her health and changing up her exercise and diet routine to get the best numbers possible. (She said she was beyond middle age at 57 which was concerning to me at 61 - I fully intend on living to 122 …). Anyway, her perspective was to add a lot more strength training, focus on protein and water intake and, of course, cardio. She said as we age or change, we just need to be as aware as possible of different stuff.
I hate different stuff. I like my routine. There was this play I read back in college - Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett. It felt like me on a day when I had nothing planned except maybe a workout later in the day.* The play was basically 2 guys standing around, waiting for whoever Godet was, and he never came … when I was 19 years old - it didn't interest me. Google AI explains it as "The play is famous for its structure where "nothing happens, nobody comes, nobody goes, it's awful". Yep.
Jen - the 57-year-old cycling teacher - is right. We need to shake things up. We can't allow ourselves to get stuck in a rut for too long, or our structure will become one where nothing happens, nobody comes, nobody goes, and it's awful. Change is necessary and good and healthy.
March to me represents the new year. It's the month of spring and rejuvenation. Now is the time for making plans - looking forward and filling your schedule. Especially if you have a lot of those nothing days. (Sometimes good, but not in excess.)
*This doesn't happen often - no plans … I need to appreciate that this as a gift. God's way of saying "slow down, Steve, jeez**, appreciate the quiet" - except if it starts happening frequently.
**I'm not sure God says "jeez".
