Notes from Steve
In my world - I have lots of “holiday events”* where I have the opportunity to eat a lot of cheese. Now, this is essential to living a life of an Iowan (consuming your weight in cheese frequently) - but I think I overdid it this past week** and I have become lactose intolerant. You’d think this would be devastating; however, I think if I became allergic to processed foods (chips) - I’d consider it a hard lesson gift from God. “Doritos? Yes, they’re lovely - but I lose the use of my right leg if I eat them …” … gift.
I’ve never been quiet about my personal journey with weight loss and the use of GLP1s. I’ve engaged people endlessly on exercise, and “food noise”, and health in general. I’m far from doing it right … I have a massive amount of opportunity to be better - and I’m fully aware that the average American gains 8 pounds during Thanksgiving and Christmas, and I’m a competitive person. With all of this in mind - in moments of “health lucidity”*** - I find myself throwing out old dips and chips in my house. This is wasteful, though. And today’s column is not on how to do it right or what to think … but maybe be aware (?).
At our fitness centers, we see a big surge of memberships in January. Crowds of eager beavers - attempting to shed their 8+ pounds and then never to be seen again after February. But - and I’m saying this to me, “Steve - what if you didn’t gain the 8+ pounds to begin with?” Interesting concept.
