Notes from Steve

November 24, 2025

This last Saturday was beautiful.  Mid-sixties, sunny … perfect day for a bike ride.  “Last good day before winter sets in” is what I told myself. I rode the HOINT - the Heart of Iowa Nature Trail from Slater to Collins (40-mile round trip).  It was beautiful, and I thought the trail would be crowded - a lot of people wanting to get one last ride in before winter.  It was deserted except for people walking their dogs.  Then I was going to run in this 5K downtown for men’s health on Sunday, but it got cancelled due to lack of participation … what’s going on?

There is a report of increased colon cancer in younger people.  Now, I don’t want to get all dark and depressing - but this news feels related.  The report insinuated that increased consumption of highly processed foods may be a contributing factor.  Since I’m an old guy, most of the algorithms that are directed towards me are old people stuff - memory, diet, exercise.  I don’t think I’ll get in any trouble saying this - but we need to move more, eat better, and pay attention.

I was telling my friend yesterday that I had to exercise at least 4 times a week - mostly for mental health.  I need it.*  I need to eat right for energy, regulation, and health.  I need to pay attention** and be conscious in order to stay up to date and relevant.

It’s never too late to start good habits.  Even though you may hate green vegetables or going to the gym - it doesn’t mean you need to go vegan or be a body builder -- the change starts small.  Commit to something small but meaningful and do it every day for 2 weeks.  Then add.  It’s that easy.

*” Are you addicted to exercise?” she asked.  Look at me - a half an hour on my spin bike doesn’t equate to addiction in my book.  I need it mostly for sleep and decompression.
**I’ve had my hearing aids for one year, and I’m amazed at what I’ve missed and how people accommodate me. (Jordan literally comes into my office, stares directly at me, and speaks loudly -- the hearing aids help me to avoid this.)
