Notes from Steve

November 2, 2026

When I look at my calendar, it shocks me every time.  Weeks are flying by, and I’m making lists for things I’m supposed to be doing next month.  There was this movie once, “Click” with Adam Sandler, and the premise was basically, this guy got a life remote control that would allow him to fast forward through the tedious or hard work parts of life and jump to the scenes that were only full of joy and laughter.  But at the end of the movie, he realized that he needed that filler part to make the joy and laughter even that much more.*

I think about this when I hear people say they want to move to warmer climates in retirement.  Now, there’s nothing wrong with this, and Godspeed to those who want to and do, but it’s not for me.  I need the horridness and devastation known as January and February to fully appreciate the other 10 months.  (I use this for beautiful days that I’m tired and don’t want to ride - my brain defaults to “you’ll regret not riding today next January when it’s 20 below”).

So, this is the thing for this week - be conscious of all the times.  The good, the bad, the sick, and the healthy - because they will give depth to the other times.  Don’t just focus on your lists**, but embrace every moment.  (My gut was sore last night because I probably ate too quickly, and I decided that the end was near.  But I felt fine this morning, and I now appreciate the pain - because it was a lesson for me to absorb and live by.)

*This is my interpretation - if it’s different, keep it to yourself.
