Notes from Steve

I read on social media this morning that if you are a guy over 50 without kids - you should be ashamed of yourself.  Well, this is interesting.  Is this a thing?*  I didn’t know this - I’ve talked to a bunch of people (like me north of 50 without kids), and they were fine with being “childless”.  Not that I’m anti-kid; I’m just not one who ever felt that I needed kids to complete my life. (My sister had kids; they’re enough.)

“WHAT?”  I know, it’s a radical statement - but not everyone needs to do everything.  I think life is much more interesting when stuff is different.  Diversity adds flavor.  Not having kids has allowed me to do things, and my life is full in other ways.

We are quick to judge other people for not being exactly how we choose to live life.  I’m sure there is a Star Trek or Twilight Zone episode out there where everybody is exactly the same, and life is incredibly boring.  My mom was a home econ teacher back in the 60s, and her big thing was making sure that every meal was colorful.  Never chicken breast with cauliflower and potatoes (too beige and boring).  Never mind the taste, it was all about the lively presentation.

If you’re a parent of one or more, or if you don’t have kids, or if choose to live with a houseful of animals - all good on you.  We need you exactly how you are.  You are perfect.  Remember that.

*(For the record, I’m not ashamed at all - I wouldn’t be a great parent. I can barely keep a plant alive, and my kids would easily be 400 pounds by the time they entered first grade.)
