Notes from Steve
This week I’m riding the hills of California in Napa Valley. I’ve never been to Napa and so this is a new adventure. I’ve been thinking the last couple of years about how “I take time off” and how “I vacation”. It’s usually as the role of host. My typical vacation - I’m planning, doing, and coordinating (not all the time, but a lot). This trip will be for the most part relaxing (except the 50 miles a day of riding bikes). Someone else will do the planning, coordinating, and telling me where to go and when. I’m not sure how I’ll handle this … could be a personal struggle.
I think - for me - evolving as a human is about giving up control and “allowing”. Not like a Tesla - complete autopilot driving - but more like a backup camera. I still need to be aware, conscious and alert, but everything shouldn’t be by my direction. I need to practice being humble more. Yesterday at the Board meetings, we talked about our strategic plan and the word “flexible” had a strong presence. Things change so much and so quickly - being nimble and having the ability to change my perspective without hyper emotion and applying trust is super helpful to strategic planning.
There is so much going on in Iowa healthcare right now, and for me - to have the opportunity to think about bike riding, good food and wine for a week (and having others plan) and nothing else is a true, absolute blessing. So, no offense, but I’m not going to think about Iowa Specialty Hospitals and Clinics for a couple of days. Cheers!
