I did a ride on my Peloton stationary bike last night. The instructor, Matt - a great coach - talked about the real definition of a peloton. A peloton is basically a group of riders but in large crowds. A peloton (or group of riders) is a fast group of riders in a line with a leader out front cutting the wind resistance, making it easier for the rest of the group (like the V formation of geese). Matt said the front person is “breaking wind”. … Made me giggle … that means something else in Iowa.
Our theme for this year is Belonging. We’ve been changing our themes pretty much every year. Keeps it fresh (I like to think). There is this restaurant in Des Moines that has had the same exact menu for 10 years, and it’s boring. And then there are restaurants that change their menus seasonally. They shake things up, and I like that. Belonging feels like being part of a peloton.
I was “today years old”* when I found that the pronunciation of the word “segue” was segway. I was watching a movie with closed captions on (because people constantly mumble, and I miss most of the movie). That word was there, and they said it weirdly. (I thought they mispronounced it, or the closed captioning misspelled it). So, I googled it with audible pronunciation. I had no idea. None - I just avoided that word forever because it sounded wrong when I used it, and no one said anything, but they always looked at me strangely. (I was in a bike shop on Saturday getting new tires, and I had to hurry to get there. They treated me very gently and with great respect - I figured it was because they knew me and knew I was a good customer. I walked around for a little bit while they were working on my bike and noticed my zipper was completely down. Completely. I now feel they were giving grace to someone who they felt needed kind attention. A feeble-minded old man.)
This week - help the feeble. Be it downed zippers, wrong pronunciation of words, wrong spelling … anything that will help them be better. Do it in a kind way. Thank you in advance.
