Do I want to know?  This is partially in reference to stepping on the scale; I know lots of people who weigh themselves daily, but that is too much for me, and I obsess.  However, with this in mind, I am excited about our upcoming Longevity Clinic at Iowa Specialty Hospitals & Clinics which will tell all current* health issues.  Body MRI and many other tests will be available to see if you can change your life and behavior to maximize the years you have left.  As a certified hypochondriac** knowing all the “fun” stuff -- this is no picnic for me.   (I’m planning on being one of the first patients.)

I tell people that ignorance is not bliss.  Ignorance is ignorance.  Not knowing if “the killer is in the house” probably means you’re going to get axed without your knowledge.  But knowing allows you to arm yourself and be prepared.  As a former Boy Scout, my motto was “be prepared” which to me means making lists and obsessing over the details.   This will probably mean a whole host of behavioral changes (like no more Doritos or exercising differently … or limiting my craft beer intake … boo!)

We are a data society.  If we don’t know or see the forecast or read/listen/watch the news and are surprised at what happens, that’s completely our fault because it’s there.  Be aware, be conscious, be present, and know.  Then act accordingly.

*This is the story I’m telling myself; I know there’s a ton more to the program than this … but this is my greatly simplified version.
**Pretty much … I made this up.
