Notes from Steve
The best thing about losing a credit or debit card is you have to re-sign up for all the stuff you pay for monthly. “What? I don’t remember signing up for that??!?” It’s cleansing. Like for example, when my basement flooded, and I had to throw away a bunch of stuff I was keeping for no reason. This is an example for me of finding the bright side. (Similar to going to karaoke with people who can’t sing or watching your untalented kid’s sports/band concert … “Yes, it looks like they’re having fun. Bless their hearts.”)
Grinning through the pain is how I’m getting through this political season. My friends and I were discussing outcomes. Regardless of what happens, there will be a large group of people who will not be happy with the result. It’s a 50/50 world. I told someone last night that a friend I was riding with had to go on blood pressure medicine recently, and it was probably all the stress in the environment. “Rise above the emotion” is something I say a lot to people when coaching how to deal with potentially volatile situations. This, for me, has now changed to “rise beyond the emotion.” It’s not enough to rise above. We, as a society, are going to have to move beyond and change our perspective because we have to live with each other in harmony regardless of who is in charge.
Harmony should be our goal.* For the most part, not everyone will ever agree. (Except - February in Iowa is the worst month - this we can all agree on.) People see, hear, taste, love, and feel through their own lens, which is great - because without diversity of thought, the world would be pretty dang boring.
*The continual song on a loop in my brain now is the old Coke commercial, “I’d like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony” … you’re welcome.
