Iowa Specialty Hospital

Notes from Steve

May 19, 2025

Hope you all had a great Hospital Week!  (I’m writing this on the Monday of Hospital Week with high anticipation of an excellent week of celebration.)  I’ve been in healthcare my entire career … a lot of people in healthcare come from a family of people who work in healthcare.  My family was made up of teachers and farmers - not doctors and nurses … but my siblings and their kids ended up in the healthcare business.  I would like to think it’s because we’re deeply caring people, but I know the real answer is we are all hypochondriacs.

I was in Arkansas biking a couple of weeks ago, and I came back with pneumonia.  I had this deep rattle of a cough and laid still for several days and medicated.  I feel great now, but I wonder if it really was pneumonia (self-diagnosed).  I half think I swallowed a mass of trail bugs.*  (I saw pics of me riding, and my mouth is agape, ready to capture anything flying towards me … I need to remember this.)  Awareness is so important.

The beauty of this month is often overshadowed by school schedules, and hospital weeks, and graduations and other “stuff.”  Don’t forget to smell the lilacs and fresh-cut grass.  Don’t forget to listen to the birds singing, and don’t forget to appreciate the flowering crabs and bright yellow dandelions … It’s a long time until next spring.

*Not sure if this is a thing.
