A Message from the CEO - February 2025

February 17, 2025

Winter is always a struggle for me.  If I had a visual - it’d be a bunch of weary people standing in a cold, white basement staring at the wall.  For me - it’s depressing and lonely.  My favorite day of the entire year is February 28th because this dreadful little month won’t happen for another 11 months.

“Steve, you say this every year”; I know, I stand by my hatred for January and February.

What I truly love, though? - IS THE MONTH OF MARCH.  I love March.  I love everything about March.  Does it snow?  Yes, sometimes a lot - but it’ll melt soon.  And spring starts, and spring is my favorite season because things grow and smell like lilacs and I can get outside and ride my bike …

How does this apply to health and Iowa Specialty Hospitals & Clinics?  March puts a smile on my face.  It makes me focus on healthy activities and the environment (the smells and colors of spring).  I was talking with one of our Physical Therapists (Colby) the other day when I was in with a hamstring pull.  I asked him if I was ever going to be able to run again* … Will I heal? Am I too old?  He said, “Of course, you’ll be fine, and you are never too old”.  This is what spring represents to me.  Rebirth.

As we all continue to age, we need to remember that age is just a number.  If we pay attention and focus on the right metrics, we can all achieve so much.  Start planning for a better you.  It can happen.
