A Message from the CEO - February 2024

February 13, 2024

So, Ted Lasso – the three-season show on Apple TV … I watched it.  And then I immediately watched it again.  I’ve never done this in my life before.  I’m a one and done movie, book, TV show guy – “I saw it and I moved on”.  It was weird, though .. when I watched it the first time, I didn’t pick up on a lot of the subtle character references in the first one or two episodes, so I went back and watched those. Now I’m discovering things I didn’t appreciate or see or understand throughout the entire first and second seasons.

If I take stock of what I’ve missed in life because I had a less-than-impressive first experience, the list is probably long.  Sometimes I wonder – why is that restaurant getting such great reviews because I didn’t have an awesome first experience?  When I open my mind, apply grace, and stop being so critical and judgmental … I allow.  When I allow – I understand what (and why) other people see that gives them such a great impression.

My close friend’s dad passed away last week.  He ran a “legendary” pizza place in Sioux City.  At the funeral, my friend gave the eulogy for his dad.  He talked about when his folks started the restaurant back in the early eighties and how they gave their blood, sweat, and tears (and talent) to make what is known today as one of the restaurant “must-haves” in Sioux City.  Those who know and appreciate … “know and appreciate”.   Your valuation of an asset fluctuates with usage – the good places/people and things in life get used and ultimately become treasured.

My new lesson* is to look beyond the first impression and see (and appreciate) the time, effort, and artistry put into pretty much everything.  I’m looking for treasure.
