Iowa Specialty Hospitals Created Significant Impact on Local Economies in 2024
Last year, Iowa Specialty Hospital-Belmond generated 561.2 jobs that added $33 million total wages to the economy, and Iowa Specialty Hospital-Clarion generated 845.6 jobs that added $52.5 million total wages to the economy, according to the latest study by the Iowa Hospital Association.
“Hospitals play a critical role not only in providing essential healthcare services, but also in driving local economic growth,” said Greg Polzin, Chief Financial Officer at Iowa Specialty Hospitals & Clinics. “At Iowa Specialty Hospitals and Clinics, we’re proud that our organizations supported over 1,400 jobs and contributed more than $85 million in total wages to our communities last year. These numbers reflect our ongoing commitment to both the health and economic vitality of the region.”
The study was compiled from hospital-submitted data to the American Hospital Association’s annual survey of hospitals. The study found that Iowa hospitals employed 141,708 people in 2024. As an income source, hospitals provide over $9.6 billion in wages. Hospital expenses accounted for over $22.9 billion of the state’s gross domestic product.
“These benefits aren’t just numbers,” said Chris Mitchell, IHA President and CEO. “They represent real programs and services that improve lives across Iowa. Many of these initiatives wouldn’t exist without the leadership and commitment of our hospitals and health systems.”
The Iowa Hospital Association is a voluntary membership organization representing the interests of hospitals and health systems to business, government, and consumer audiences.
