HealthLeaders Media Honors Top Healthcare Leadership Teams
HealthLeaders Media has announced the winners for the 2007 Top Leadership Teams in Healthcare awards program, which recognizes the best leadership teamwork in hospitals, health plans and medical group practices.
The HealthLeaders Media Top Leadership Teams in Healthcare 2007 program, sponsored by CIT Healthcare and Pershing Yoakley & Associates, is designed to celebrate the outstanding teamwork that occurs in healthcare organizations each day, to share what makes top leadership teams successful, and to encourage other healthcare leaders to learn from the best practices of top leadership teams.
The 2007 honorees are:
Large Hospitals and Health Systems - CHRISTUS Health, Dallas, Texas
With more than 40 hospitals, health clinics and health facilities covering six states, CHRISTUS was formed from the parts of two merged health systems. Under the direction of CEO Thomas Royer, MD, and a nine-member senior leadership team, CHRISTUS has used a commitment to excellence in clinical quality, service quality, financial performance and value to the community as the pillars of an organizational turnaround.
Community and Mid-Sized Hospitals - Cabell Huntington Hospital, Huntington, WV
Facing an aging physical plant at the hospital, the CEO of Cabell Huntington, Brent Marsteller, and his team set out to transform the building outside and to commit to a culture of excellence inside. The senior leadership team has seen the hospital through marked increases in patient satisfaction, physician satisfaction, employee satisfaction and financial performance. And later this year, Cabell Huntington will open its new five-story hospital.
Small Hospitals - Wright Medical Center, Clarion, Iowa
Wright Medical Center is a 25-bed Critical Access Hospital that serves approximately 15,000 residents of rural north central Iowa. Led by CEO Steven J. Simonin, the senior leadership team set out to meet the goal of being a model primary healthcare provider. A system of training, goals and accountability was put in place for each of the hospital's 300 employees. Using a team approach, the hospital has reached operational goals in areas ranging from a 50 percent reduction in patient falls to tripling the hospital's days of cash on hand.
Medical Group Practices - Radiological Associates of Sacramento, California
A 70-physician medical group practice that dates back to 1917, Radiological Associates of Sacramento has thrived in an environment of downward pressures on reimbursement for imaging and increasing customer expectations. Executive Vice President Fred Gaschen and his administrative leadership team work hand-in-hand with the group's medical leadership to pursue excellence in clinical performance and research.
Health Plans - Erickson Advantage, Baltimore, MD
The Baltimore-based health plan operates a Medicare waiver demonstration project at Erickson Retirement Communities, which has 18 sites in eight states serving 20,000 residents. CEO Bruce Sturm and his team have managed in a short 18 months to grow membership from 32 to 2,040 and have demonstrated improvement in areas such as acute length of stay and skilled-nursing length of stay.
HealthLeaders Media Editor-in-Chief Jim Molpus says one of the themes from this year's honorees is their ability to sustain a momentum toward excellence over a period of time. "One of the truths we have found in the years of the program is that truly great healthcare leadership teamwork takes long, hard, disciplined work from a dedicated group," Molpus says.
HealthLeaders magazine is the leading strategic healthcare publication for more than 40,000 senior-level healthcare decision makers. The Top Leadership Teams in Healthcare program, sponsored by CIT Healthcare and Pershing Yoakley & Associates, celebrates the outstanding teamwork in healthcare organizations, shares what makes top leadership teams successful, and encourages other healthcare leaders to learn from the best practices of top leadership teams.
The 2007 honorees will be featured speakers at the annual Top Leadership Teams in Healthcare Conference and Awards, to be held Oct. 11-12 at the Drake Hotel in Chicago. Along with the winners, more than 30 healthcare chief executives and team members will share their secrets of teamwork success in focus areas including governance, financial strategy, quality and physician relations.
