Tyler Kahlstorf - Heart of ISH

On July 4, 2026, while celebrating the holiday with his family on Clear Lake, Iowa, Tyler Kahlstorf demonstrated extraordinary courage, composure, and compassion during a life-threatening emergency.

As Tyler's family was traveling by boat from the smaller lake to the larger lake, one of his children noticed that two jet skis had collided. Tyler's father, who was driving the boat, immediately turned around to see if assistance was needed. As they approached the scene, it was clear the accident was severe.

Without hesitation, Tyler called 911, handed his phone to his brother-in-law so the call could continue, grabbed a life jacket, and jumped into the water to help the victims. Drawing on the skills he learned through Iowa Specialty Hospitals & Clinics' Basic Life Support (BLS) training, Tyler assessed injuries, monitored vital signs, and provided reassurance to those involved. While his family helped move victims from the water, Tyler remained with one victim in the lake, providing care and support until emergency responders arrived.

According to his father, Tyler remained calm under immense pressure, acted decisively, and even took time to pray with one of the victims during the ordeal. His ability to think clearly, respond confidently, and provide compassionate care undoubtedly made a difference in a critical situation.

Tyler serves in the Informatics Department at Iowa Specialty Hospitals & Clinics. Although BLS training is often associated with clinical roles, Tyler chose to complete the training, recognizing the value of being prepared to help whenever the need arises.
