Iowa Specialty Hospital

Notes from Steve

March 12, 2015

Awesome, awesome party Friday night! If you missed it, you missed a great time. At Iowa Specialty Hospitals & Clinics, we are so incredibly blessed to have fantastic providers (who know how to throw a shin-dig!).  YAY!!!

So today, yesterday, and going forward, my focus in on mindfulness. “Really, Steve, do you know what mindfulness is?” YES, it is about being wide awake, aware, and present in all that we do. “How does this make us better people?  How does being present and fully conscious in all we do make this a better place?” OK … I would say that if I am not trying to multi-task and juggle lots of projects at once, I am better at the task at hand. Like driving and texting – not a good idea. Like if our surgeons tried to do crossword puzzles while operating – I don’t think so. Not a good idea. If we – like our great providers – focus on our priorities and give 100% of ourselves to whatever is in front of us, then we will be madly successful. I don’t know about you, but “madly successful” sounds pretty great.

Presence, awareness, and appreciation are so much easier when the weather is fantastic, and things are going well. Open yourself this week to getting at least 10 to 20 minutes of sunlight a day. If it means lying on the patio during your lunch break, so be it. Your mind and body will appreciate the extra vitamin D. (Note: Please wear clothes when doing this.) Also, smile as much as possible, and if you can, whistle. Feeling good, being happy, and walking with a dance in your step are great ways to appreciate both mindfulness and spring. Life is too short to run on autopilot. Wake up and dance (as if no one is looking).
