Iowa Specialty Hospital

Notes from Steve

January 21, 2016

Today the stock market is tanking.  Worse day in a long time.  Worst January in history (I made this up but it’s probably true).  For a lot of us, thinking about this is kind of like being in the house during a blizzard.  In the house I’m warm and cozy and fine while outside is terrifyingly awful.  It is easy for me to forget that I live in a world that includes wind, snow and cold because I’ve chosen to ignore the wintery elements … however, it doesn’t mean they don’t exist.  “Why is he saying this?  How does this pertain to anything?”  The blizzard affects us when we try and go outside – driving is treacherous, the walks are awful and impassable and we have to dig ourselves out. When the stock market tanks like it did in 2008, prices and businesses are affected and sometimes, we are forced to dig out of a mess.

“Again, Steve, what does this have to do with me?”  For the average Joe, a stock market correction won’t affect them immediately, but down the road when things get tighter with businesses … businesses react by changing their practices (tightening their belts), employees are affected  and the world changes.  Now I’m not saying this for Iowa Specialty Hospitals & Clinics employees to get worried – I’m saying this because it never hurts for you and me to be aware of what is going on outside.  Read the paper, listen to the news, scan the horizon and be aware of what is happening in the world.

In a couple of weeks – Iowa will be honored again by hosting the first in the nation caucuses.  I was talking at the fitness center on Monday with a politically savvy friend about the caucuses and I said to the other person standing with us that she needed to plan on attending and participating.  She said she’d never been and really, she had no interest.  I realize that for most of us Monday night, February 1, 2016 – our datebook is probably packed but if possible, get to your local precinct about 6:30PM (starts at 7) and participate in the process.  Why?  Because it is important for you to participate in the world.  Get engaged!  Be part of the solution!  And if you don’t participate, then please never talk to me about politics because you had your chance to take part …
