Notes from Steve

January 7, 2019

A 2019 global goal that I read on twitter: “Pry open the box you hide your joy in.”  Deep.  I was thinking about this locked box with my joy … What does joy look like and how do we unlock or unleash our joy often?  I think sometimes we bind ourselves from having fun and joyful times by putting up barriers and walls.  Join me in a quest to discover joy in 2019.

My direction for this new year focuses on being ready for whatever opportunity arises.  I’m not saying yes to everything like I said I would do (but didn’t) last year but I’m open to seeing everything clearly and as an opportunity.  My three words help to describe how my 2019 journey will go.

My first word is liminal.  This word is kind of like, when you wake up and sort of remember your dream.  It is the space between conscious and unconscious.  I chose this word because we - all of us - are driven by our intuition and a lot of times our intuition is correct but we push it aside because someone else tells us we are wrong.  Quint Studer used to say that when we ask for direction, 80 to 90% of the time, we know the answer, we just aren’t confident enough.  Trust.your.inner.voice.

Fluidity.  This word to me means the opposite of “black and white”.  When I gave my dad’s eulogy 10 years ago, I spoke of his inability to see boundaries - never black or white, always some shade of gray.  There was always another way to see an issue - “choices and directions are never an absolute”, he’d say.  I need to follow his lead.

Nimble.  My last direction for the future is to be nimble.  Nimble to me means quickness and agility.  I like to think that decisions are best made quickly with a good blend of intuition and information.

A lot of what I am looking to for 2019 is trust.  Trust in myself and in others to do the right thing.  I have a sign in my office that is an old Nike Just Do It sign.  To me it’s more than marketing from the 80’s - it tells me that “trust your gut, you know the answer and direction - just do it.” Happy New Year all, it’s going to be a blast!
