I was in Puerto Rico last week. The island was devastated in a hurricane 6 or so years ago. The place we stayed through Airbnb was really nice, but the neighborhood was still in need of help. We take for granted our blessings - it’s not great everywhere.
Blessings. We used to do this song by Laura Story in my church band. The song essentially talks about how wisdom is a blessing that comes through trials - we learn and grow from our aches and disappointments.
What if we changed our perspective on those things that hurt us from pain to blessing? There are so many reasons we can look at our lives and be angry or sad, but maybe these are blessings in disguise.
Hurricanes? Build back better … maybe our buildings are more stable and our communities are more planned out. What about disease or tragedy? Pain from loss or ailment gives us fortitude and resolve. Perhaps by going through tough times, our lessons can help lead others through similar battles.
Whatever the narrative, by focusing on the silver linings and not the clouds - we can take the ugly and make it beautiful. It won’t be easy, but it will be worth it.
