I love this time of year!...especially this year. I noticed this morning how LOUD the birds were singing. It was as if they were joyful that winter is over. The leaves are busting out and the smell of the breeze and the rain is so refreshing. Warm is overcoming cool and life overcoming death. We get a fresh start each spring. I’m reminded as I write this that we get a fresh start every time we ask God for it as well. The last six months (winter is six months long in Iowa right?) have been difficult. For my wife and I, we still don’t know how to answer the innocent question, “How many children do you have?” It’s always been “5”. “4” sticks sideways in the back of our throats.
Professionally, there have been many challenges. It’s as if we came to a large rock in the middle of the road and the only way we could conquer it was to separate for a while, find our own way, and say “I’ll see you on the other side.” The beauty is that we all care very much about our patients, our community, and our hospitals. On a larger scale, navigating the healthcare industry is very difficult. Changes are fast and furious. They are being implemented without enough foresight (ex., New alternative payment methods such as Medicaid MCOs and MACRA). We are left to sort it all out. We have to constantly be aware of trying to keep doctors and nurses engaged, increase quality, keep patients happy, AND pay the bills. We should be encouraged. We are doing it. Together.
So, for now, enjoy the April showers. The May flowers are right around the corner and so is a fresh start.
