On June 1st we had our monthly medical staff meeting. We got the usual business of the meeting done and then we proceeded to honor Dr. Mike Whitters. His daughters (Amanda and Allie) brought with them a slideshow. It was fun to scroll through the years to a well-timed soundtrack. After the slideshow, we opened up the floor to those who wished to say a few words to Dr. Mike. There were many laughs and even a few tears. The most touching moments were when Dr. Gabrielson stood up, teared up, and proceeded to tell Dr. Mike what he meant to him, personally and professionally. He was followed by Dr. Ahrendsen who gave a teary eyed tribute as well. Many others spoke too.
What I didn’t and couldn’t say that morning was; Mike, thank you for that hug you gave me when Jack died. I truly FELT God’s love in that hug. Thank you for the precedent you set here. Thank you for recommending me for this position and for the subsequent mentoring. Thank you for all you’ve done for patients, and most all for opening your heart to God to love his people. I wish you the very best in this third phase (the “give back” phase-your words) of your life. You ‘ve already got a great head start on this phase! God bless you and keep you!
PS: I hope you find your damn shaker of salt!
