Making the Rounds with Dr. Hurt

Speak Life

I just came from our Medical Staff meeting.  We had some excellent presentations.  The one that really stood out for me was about Adverse Childhood Events (ACE) delivered by Dr. Jennifer Blacksmith of our mental health team.  I had some idea, but not to the degree of impact that emotional trauma had on physical health and lifespan, nor that there are excellent screening tools to discover it.  In fact, we may say ten years from now that utilizing some of these tools and techniques implemented by our mental health team, and propagated by our medical staff, was the direct correlation as to why our patient population became healthier, happier and less addicted!

It’s the nature of our business to see a lot of pain and suffering on a daily basis in our lives.  That is the tip of the iceberg.  Most of it is really masked so people can get through the day.  I encourage us all to speak life in our words and behavior with every daily interaction.  There is so much bad that we need to actively do good to combat it.  That is why the 5/10 we do in the hallways is so important!  We tend to share a lot more smiles than we would otherwise.

I ask you all to pray for my brother-in-law, Skip Baughman.  He has been diagnosed with a cancer that has central nervous system involvement and may only have weeks to live.  He is a retired paramedic/fire captain, a permanent deacon in his church, and has been married to my sister for 48 years.  He was very influential to me in my younger days.  As I prepare to attend the funeral of another of our extended Iowa Specialty family, I’m very thankful for the smiles speaking life to me in the hallway here! Keep it up.  It’s more important than you realize.

We need to be reminded that there is nothing morbid about honestly confronting the thought of life’s end and preparing for it so that we go gracefully and peacefully.  The fact is, we cannot truly face life until we have learned to face the fact that it will be taken away from us.  – Billy Graham
