“Opportunity” is a word that has changed connotation in my life. Formerly, it was a positive word. Getting accepted to a school, passing a test, becoming a starter on a team or getting a new job, these were all “Great Opportunities!” It has now become a euphemism for “this is what you need to work on.” Recently, we had our employment engagement survey. All areas of our organization were examined, and overall we did well. Our “opportunities” have been presented as well, including those of senior leaders. This can be a humbling experience.
Keep your heads up! We can all be proud of our accomplishments. I know that we all strive to be the best we can be as human beings. We (as a whole) already know what we do wrong. When our “opportunities” are pointed out, it is rarely a complete surprise. I challenge you, as I challenge myself, to be better than you were the day before. Doing that each day will assure you are on the path to becoming who we were created to be. If we are doing our very best, no one can ask anything more. It’s just up to us to recognize when we aren’t and take action.
We are in this together! The best teams challenge each other as well as encourage one another. The survey is over and now is the time to build with grace, honesty, and compassion.
