If you are reading this on the day The Insider comes out, I will be out of the office taking a few days off from the hospital to enjoy time with my family. If you don’t know, I struggle taking time away from work. I have this nagging sense of not wanting to let anyone down and, therefore, often feel the need to be physically present - after all, my team is working so why shouldn’t I? I am not sure exactly why I feel like this as I have a great team that can handle anything while I am away. Thank goodness my wife is our travel agent and often insists on taking a vacation somewhere.
The point I am trying to make is - don’t neglect yourself and your health to avoid feeling selfish. Selfishness doesn’t have to be a bad thing. It can be good to be a little selfish to take care of your emotional, mental, and physical well-being. Those who focus entirely on giving, end up overwhelmed, fatigued, and stressed. As someone pointed out to me recently, taking time for oneself is not being selfish but rather practicing self-care.
Hopefully everyone will get the chance to practice a little self-care this summer!
Until next time……
