Iowa Specialty Hospital

From Ashley's Perspective

June 14, 2021

We rise by lifting others up…

This week we had a few conversations about our 5 year goals and plans as it relates to Iowa Specialty Hospital and Clinics. It isEducation is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world. exciting to think about the future and where we want to go; yet also challenging as we know there are things that will happen that we did not plan for or have on our radar. I am not sure about you, but I didn’t have a pandemic on my plans for 2020. However with that change of course came some great outcomes like system wide Telehealth and more time with family at home for me personally.  So as we discussed plans for the future, one of the overall goals continues to be the best place for patients to receive care. Therefore, the conversation focused on how we measure this in the future and how we attain it. One theme that kept coming up was education and training for all employees, leaders, and providers to ensure we all have the tools and knowledge needed to provide that best patient experience.  As Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful tool to change the world” and that is what we are going to do - change the world one patient at a time!

Rylan Recknor learning to bat at t-ball practice. An example of how powerful education can be showed up also this week as we took Rylan to her first t-ball practice and game. On the way to the first practice Rylan asked “How do I throw the ball?” You see we have not practiced at home as this was a last minute decision to sign her up! However, I told her that the coach would teach her. We arrived shortly after and within the first 5 minutes her coach was showing them how to throw the ball. Whew!  She was so excited after practice she asked if we could get her own ball, glove, bats and tee to hit off of at home and wanted to invite everyone to watch her at her game!  The education her coach provided her gave her the confidence she needed and instilled a love for T-Ball. Her coach certainly changed the world that day and didn’t even realize it.

So over the next few weeks, we will continue to have more conversations about what this education for all officially looks like and finalize the overall goals for next year, as well as the next five years, and then we’ll share them with you soon. It is exciting to think about the future and all the possibilities.
