We continue to work on personal responsibility in our house in raising our kids. This past week I had an early meeting and told the kids on my way out of the house they needed to ride the bus. Maleigha called shortly before 8 a.m. to share they had missed the bus and wanted to know if they could just stay home and do online school instead of walking. My response was nope, but you can walk to me, and I will give you a lift as soon as my meeting is done. I fully anticipated a laundry list of excuses as to why they missed the bus. Much to my surprise, each one of them took responsibility for their own part in not paying attention to the time and missing their bus. I like to think that is progress!
Our Standards of Behavior at Iowa Specialty Hospitals & Clinics also highlight personal responsibility in the ownership and accountability section. Specifically the sentence “Accept responsibility for my actions and do the right thing” is a great reminder to us to adjust our sails. We often get caught up in either complaining about a problem or making excuses. We all do it, myself included, and need the reminders to refocus not just our attitudes but our personal responsibility as well. As we are officially in the spring season now - known as the season for new beginnings - so it is a perfect time to complete a refresh on your attitude and perspective. Let’s collectively head into the next few months with positivity and personal ownership. I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish!
