Amy's Reflections

August 16, 2018

I am Missouri this week visiting relatives and spending time with my family.  We ventured to Hannibal one day to explore, and while dining at a restaurant the waitress shared that my children were well behaved and had great manners.  This always takes me back a step because as a parent we often get so focused on disciplining and correcting behavior, we forget to stop and enjoy the fruits of that labor.  Rick and I are trying to give our kids a great foundation; an appreciation for others with a healthy dose of manners.  Simple things like please and thank you and holding the doors open for others, because at the end of the day it really is the little things that make a big difference. Hopefully someday these foundational things will help them through whatever challenges they face.

The same is true for Iowa Specialty Hospitals and Clinics. It is the little things that you do for our patients every day that make all the difference.  The foundation that we built within our standards of behavior and the exceptional care we provide is what sets us apart and make us special. I remember presenting on our standards to a group from a different hospital, and they all looked at me like I was crazy as I attempted to explain that saying hi in the hallways and putting patients first really made a big difference.  It was so satisfying a couple weeks later when they reported back on how "hard" it was to do all the time. I know in my heart that our standards and our incredible staff are what set us apart each and every day.  This week step back and enjoy the fruits of your labor.  This week don't focus on what needs to be fixed or changed, but simply enjoy that you work with great people in a great place doing great things!
