Iowa Specialty Hospital

Amy's Reflections

October 10, 2022

The Iowa Hospital Association hosted their annual meeting this past week. It is always nice to connect with fellow healthcare leaders in the state.  I was able to attend the final presentation which had a focus on best practices for engaging patients in their healthcare journey.  The primary focus of this session was innovative ways to use technology to help patients feel more included in their care. Interestingly enough, one of the solutions was the interactive white boards that we are currently using in our system. I love it when we are out in front setting the standard for how care should be delivered in the future. Although it requires us to work through different processes and fix issues, in the end, our patients benefit and that is the core of what we do.

One of the CEOs that I spoke with asked how we continue to support our staff and help keep their buckets full. This is a tough topic; I am not sure it is any one thing that can be done to accomplish this, but rather the connection to purpose that we are able to achieve as a team. We have spent a lot of time this past year reflecting on each of our callings and why and how we ended up in healthcare. That is the center of engagement. It isn’t something I can buy and give; it is simply who we are, and why we do what we do. This is also what makes Iowa Specialty Hospitals and Clinics such an incredible place to work. Thank you for all that you do and the care that you provide our patients. I couldn’t be prouder to be part of our team.
