Amy's Reflections

December 22, 2016

Don't Make Assumptions. Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life. ~ Don Miguel Ruiz

Well it’s official; I have another driver in the house. Shaila turned 16 on December 11th and acquired her official license on the 12th. I should have listened more closely when people kept telling me that I would blink and my children would be grown up. It has been interesting to watch her learn about driving. I am sure she would be content to have me fill up her car with gas forever, but that is definitely a skill set she will need to master for her adult life. She came home one night this past week from a basketball game and shared that her brakes didn’t work. As we talked through it, we determined that she was on ice and her anti-lock brakes kicked in. I love that she wasn’t afraid to ask the question so she could learn and grow.  I pray that she continues to be fearless, but always asks questions.

Imagine how great it would be if we all asked the questions instead of making assumptions. We tend to be really creative in our assumption making.  We spend a lot of time and energy on it, when we would be so much better off just asking questions. We are almost always guaranteed success when we put our heads together to problem solve. My challenge for you this week is to take a deep breath amongst all the holiday hustle and bustle and just ask! Instead of assuming, reach out and ask. You may be surprised to know the real answer!

When we believe in lies, we cannot see the truth, so we make thousands of assumptions and we take them as truth. One of the biggest assumptions we make is that the lies we believe are the truth! ~ Don Miguel Ruiz
