Quite a few of us attended the EPIC kickoff in Iowa City this week and were able to learn more about the plan and timeline for the EPIC implementation. This will be another huge change for our system and can definitely create anxiety in many of us. The best way to reduce anxiety in this situation is ask questions and be an active participant. I had someone ask me today if we are converting any of our patient history over to EPIC. Yes, that is the plan however, that means that we want the information we convert to be as accurate as possible so we get off to a great start. One of the best things that I learned at the kickoff was that the U of I has put together an incredible team who is dedicated to this project and our success. We definitely are not in this alone and they are here to support us.
As we move forward with our EPIC implementation, I encourage everyone to keep in mind that change is inevitable. Will everything be wonderful and without issue? Probably not, but it will be an incredible journey. So try to take a deep breath and enjoy the ride. Think of all the things in your life that you would have never done if you let your fear of the unknown outweigh your sense of adventure. We most likely would never have learned to drive, started school, or even learned to walk, if we let fear control our decisions. The only thing you can control is your own attitude and how you embrace the changes that are heading your way. So, find your happy pants, put on a smile, and you will breeze through this because you are all amazing!
