Amy's Reflections

We are in the world to support one another. ― Lailah Gifty Akita

This past week I hit my breaking point and had a meltdown. With the hectic pace that this time of the year brings, it is difficult to keep up with everything and continue to smile through it all. I received a ton of support from family, friends and co-workers which helped me immensely. I also found that most of those that I reached out to were in the same boat. I think we often forget that we are not alone in this journey. This is exactly why I share stories about my kids so that maybe someone else will be able to find comfort knowing they are not alone. This parenting thing is harder than it looks!

In the midst of my meltdown, I had a pretty blunt conversation with Shaila about expectations. I shared with her that I am very proud of her, but as her mother, my job is to parent her and she needs to remember the importance of family amidst all of her activities and fun with friends. We had a great talk and it is times like this that I miss my own mother very much. I definitely miss her words of wisdom as I am sure we had similar conversations when I was growing up.

So, as we enter the holiday season, remember that even though it is supposed to be the happiest time of the year it may not be for everyone. We are all in this together and don’t hesitate to reach out to each other and support each other. You never know when you will be the one needing the helping hand.

We each have the power to give. It’s the most gratifying feeling ever. By reaching out to help another human being you're sending ripples of positive change. ― Dana Arcuri
