You Are Not Alone - Mental Health Services Availalble

October 5, 2018

If you are a person with a mental health diagnosis, there are 350 Million people in the world of all ages who are like you, since they also have a mental health issue.  When someone has a chronic illness, they often feel alone in their struggles.  They wonder “Do people understand how hard I am trying even though it doesn’t look like it?” or “I’d love to be able to go to that concert, but I just don’t feel well enough?”  Often people with chronic illness, including mental illness, feel isolated from others.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated October 10th as World Mental Health Day to recognize the people who are diagnosed with a mental illness.  Countries, 91% of members of the World Health Organization, are implementing a Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan to address the two major needs in the world:  the shortage of trained mental health workers and more community based mental health facilities which can serve people where they live.

Closer to home, NAMI Iowa (National Alliance on Mental Illness—Iowa chapter) provides education, advocacy, events and walks, a health library, and specialized information on children’s mental health issues.   Their Facebook page has interesting helpful tips, activities, and general information.   NAMI, a national organization, which has chapters in every state, serves adults, children, families, and mental health providers.  They have a program many families with a member diagnosed with mental illness have found invaluable for support, education, and being with others who have a similar life experience—Family to Family.  This program is led by family members for family members—they have walked the same path.  NAMI also has many programs, formal and informal, for the person diagnosed with a mental illness.  Information on NAMI Iowa can be found online at https://namiiowa.org
