Receives the 2017 Women’s Choice Award® as one of America’s Best Hospitals for Patient Experience, Patient Safety & Bariatric Surgery

Awards recognize safe surgery practices and lower rates for complications and infections 

Iowa Specialty Hospital has been named one of America’s Best Hospitals for Patient Experience, Patient Safety and Bariatric Surgery by the Women’s Choice Award®. These awards signify that Iowa Specialty Hospital is ranked 12th out of 1,283 hospitals for patient experience, is in the top 0.03% of 3,005 U.S. hospitals for patient safety and top 0.02% of 4,789 U.S. hospitals reviewed for Bariatric Surgery.

America’s Top 100 Hospitals for Patient Experience Award

The Women’s Choice Award collects the data for the following HCAHPS survey measures and uses a weighted average to award the best hospitals for patient experience:

•    Effective communication with nurses and doctors
•    Responsiveness to requests for help
•    Pain management
•    Explanation about medications before being administered
•    Bathroom and room cleanliness
•    Patient recommendation rating

America’s Best Hospital for Patient Safety Award 

To receive the Patient Safety award, hospitals must also use an Inpatient Safe Surgery Checklist to assess effective communication and safe practices during three perioperative periods: prior to administration of anesthesia; prior to skin incision; and prior to the patient leaving the operating room or procedural area. 

Iowa Specialty Hospital is one of 451 award recipients representing the hospitals that have met the highest standards for patient safety in the U.S. by Women’s Choice Award.  

America’s Best Hospital for Bariatric Surgery Award

Iowa Specialty Hospital achieved the America’s Best distinction for Bariatric Surgery by meeting the following criteria:

•    Accreditation by the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery joint-sponsored Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP)
•    At least 72% of patients reporting on the HCAPHS survey that they would definitely recommend the hospital
•    A high patient safety ranking based on 11 Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ measures of infection and complication rates
