Cleaning and Disinfecting for COVID-19

August 10, 2020

First you must clean…..Then you may disinfect!

• You can help to reduce the spread of the coronavirus by cleaning and disinfecting high touch surfaces, such as doorknobs, light switches, handles, desks, toilets, sinks, faucets, and tables frequently.

• Please put gloves on before cleaning and disinfecting & Dispose of gloves after cleaning and disinfecting. Thoroughly wash your hands after removing your gloves.

• Cleaning with soap and water removes the dirt and decreases the number of germs on surfaces.

• Once surfaces have been cleaned, you can apply the disinfectant to kill any germs that may be left.

What disinfectants kill coronavirus on surfaces?

• Although many products have not been tested against this virus, they're known to work against other, harder-to-kill viruses.

• Products with active ingredients such as ethanol, hydrogen peroxide or quaternary ammonium are recommended. You should check labels for EPA registration numbers.

• Many disinfectants need to remain on surfaces for some time to be effective, this is known as the “DWELL or CONTACT time.” Which means the time a surface must remain wet to do the job. Each product will vary on contact times so be sure to read the labels.

Does bleach work against coronavirus on surfaces?

• Yes. You can make a disinfecting solution by combining 4 teaspoons (about 20 milliliters) of household bleach and 1 quart (slightly less than 1 liter) of water. Read and follow instructions and precautions.

• For example, wear gloves and make sure there's good airflow in the room. Don't mix bleach with ammonia or any other cleanser,(FYI) combining products could produce toxic fumes.

How can I disinfect phones and other electronics?

• Cellphones, laptops, computers, and screens may be wiped with disinfecting wipes that are 70% alcohol. Wipe the entire phone including along the sides and back where you hold it. Let it air dry. Remember to wash your hands when you're done.

AND AGAIN …WASH YOUR HANDS, WASH YOUR HANDS, & WASH YOUR HANDS!
