Funds received allowed the Belmond Lab Department to purchase a Biofire FilmArray.  This equipment conducts PCR and DNA testing for infectious agents such as bacteria and virus.

We are very thankful to the Barkema Charitable Trust,” said Rayne Premo, Lab Leader.  “Their generosity has made it possible to provide this important testing to our patients.  We now have the potential to reduce wait times in all departments, including the ER, and may even provide shorter lengths of stay for our patients.”

Additionally, the new Biofire FilmArray could reduce future diagnostic tests for patients, decrease the chance of antibiotic resistance, and enhance infection control over all.  It also allows Iowa Specialty Hospital to remain on the leading edge of diagnostic microbiology testing, which is a win for its patients.

The Foster and Evelyn Barkema Charitable Trust is an Iowa Non-Profit Trust that was created on August 7, 2012. Foster and Evelyn Barkema were lifelong residents of rural Alexander, Iowa, both passing away in the summer of 2013.   This Trust was organized exclusively for charitable purposes in order to make distributions to qualified tax-exempt organizations which are of a charitable, educational, literary, health or public service nature.
