Iowa Specialty Hospital’s 1st Baby of 2016, Harper Corrine Blacksmith, was born on January 1st at 11:06 a.m. to Joe and Jennifer Blacksmith. Harper weighed 5 pounds, 4.8 ounces and was 19 ¼ inches long. She has blue eyes and strawberry blonde hair. Dr. Amanda Tew and Dr. Emily Hill both participated in the delivery.
“Harper was the best New Year’s surprise!” said Mother Jennifer. “Surprise, because she came early via an emergency c-section... But we received phenomenal care! We couldn’t have expected any better! We want to thank our “A Team”: Dr. Amanda Tew, Dr. Emily Hill, Dr. Mike Whitters, Jim Dorn, Beth Buchholtz, and nurses, Mel Carrigan, Nikki Jones, and Amy Bahnsen. Thank you also to everyone for the donations! The congratulations we received was overwhelming!”
The couple recently moved to the area from Missouri due to Jennifer’s new position at Iowa Specialty Hospital as a psychologist. Joe is a conductor for the Union Pacific Railroad in Boone. The couple lives in Clarion. Harper is welcomed by her four-legged friends, Dutchess and Sig.
Dr. Amanda Tew commented: “The first delivery of the New Year is always exciting! However, this year was a little more exciting than normal due to the circumstances, but everything came out beautifully.”

Iowa Specialty Hospital’s OB Department delivered 311 newborns in 2015, which is the highest number of newborns that has ever been delivered in one year at Iowa Specialty Hospital. There has been a steady incline since 2012 with 211 babies delivered in 2012, 250 babies in 2013, and 264 babies in 2014.
